While watching ESPN SportsCenter recently, I was intrigued by the amount of time professional baseball players spend studying opposing pitchers. Every movement is scrutinized, every twitch is analyzed, and every delivery is examined. Through this type of scouting report, a good hitter can often get the advantage by picking up on subtle movements that tip him off to what pitch is coming next. The more they discover about their opponent the better chance they have of winning.
This is also true in the spiritual realm. Every Believer has an opponent. Satan is deceiving and cunning as he stalks our path, and he’s out for blood. Understanding our enemy’s strategy is not just a helpful suggestion; it’s a matter of life and death. Satan’s chief weapon in his arsenal is telling lies, and one of his favorite lies that he implants in Christians’ minds is that they are unacceptable to God. He’ll use a variety of ways to tell you that you’re still a sinner and still on the outside looking in. He hunts for your vulnerabilities and attacks when your back is turned.
The best defense against Satan is truth, which comes from God through his Word. Dig into his Word and discover for yourself what God thinks about those whose faith is in him. A good place to start is the New Testament book of Ephesians. You might just be amazed at the grace your Father has lavished upon you.
