There are five areas of vulnerability where death gets a toehold in a marriage:
- Thinking that YOU can make your marriage work
- Confusion about roles and needs
- Lack of communication
- Lack of forgiveness
- Lack of commitment
Number one can be remedied only as you accept the vital truth that we've already stated: YOU CAN'T--BUT CHRIST CAN.

Number three can be met head on only when you realize that your inability to communicate is not genetic'it's flesh. The results of a survey that we have taken many times is very revealing. There are three questions:
- How long have you been married?
- Rate your marriage on a 1-10 scale with 10 being nearly perfect.
- What one thing would you say has kept your marriage from being all that you longed for it to be?
Thirty-nine couples out of every one hundred pinpointed "lack of communication" as the one factor that had opened the door to a "lifeless" relationship rating 2, or -0, or a low 3, or a 1, barely.
