3 Factors That Affect Your Decision-Making Process

What Makes Me Tick? It's another way of asking why and how do I make the decisions I make. Several factors come into play including my spiritual condition, the design of my soul (personality) and my circumstantial environment.

1. Spiritual Condition

The fact is that if I have not confessed Jesus Christ as Savior, then Satan will be hard at work to keep me that way by encouraging either positive or negative behaviors that keep me from responding in faith to the wooing of the Holy Spirit. If I have received Christ, I have a new heart that is united with God in spirit and purpose. In this case, God is at work in me to motivate my will toward His good purposes (Philippians 2:12,13).

2. Circumstantial Environment

The second factor is my circumstantial environment. Are the messages I'm receiving building me up or tearing me down?

3. My Personality

The third factor is how God designed my soul / personality (Psalms 139:13,14). It is here that God designed in my unique "bent (Proverbs 22:6)." This design makes me unique from ever other human being on the planet. This design is the analytic and emotional filter that I run all information through prior to making a decision.

Many books have been written about personality and much good work has been done by Christians in understanding dominant personality styles, but three areas fail to be addressed completely or accurately.

1. Recognizing the implications of our identity in Christ and His life in us in the context of personality,
2. Recognizing that personality analysis is not putting someone in a box, but rather helping them to fully mature and grow in their personality identity, and
3. Distinguishing personality from flesh (personality is God designed and flesh is an orchestration of Satan and personal self-effort).

Placing these insights into the proper context results in an extremely practical means of putting shoe leather to "abiding in Christ" and "loving one another."
