Redefining Romans 6:1-3

“What shall we say then?  Are we to continue in sin so that Grace may increase?  May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?  Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?” (Romans 6:1-3)

Much of institutional religion uses this passage to support their philosophy of no longer “using Grace” as a license to sin.

I believe what Paul is saying here has nothing to do with “license” or is it meant to cause us to focus on “sin!”

It is all about “True” Grace…period!

The heart of this passage is found in the question Paul asks; “How can we who died to sin still live in…sin?”

So wouldn’t the wise thing be for us to answer the question, instead of drawing false conclusions based on an erroneous belief in a punishing God?

NO!  Paul is not talking about “measures of sin and Grace” for the law of the Spirit of Life IN Christ has made us FREE from the condemning law of sin and death! (Romans 8:2)

And then again, YES!  Whether we like it or not, His Grace is the license to keep on sinning, or doing anything else for that matter!  How else does one learn of Unconditional Love (Christ) unless they push the conditional limits?

Anything else is nothing but dead letter performance based Christian “law!”  Let me ask this, would you rather “grow up” IN the Grace of God or under the condemning law of sin and death?

Discovering the truth of who we are IN Christ, and just as important, who Christ is IN us, is not something we learn in pristine church settings!  NO!  We learn the truth by pushing Unconditional Love to unknown limits we never thought we could!   Apart from Him, we have a bent towards independence that can only be dealt with by KNOWING True Grace!  True Grace doesn’t see anything but Christ!  No matter what a person does or doesn’t do!

Paul IS NOT measuring Grace or sin!  He is in fact saying, “How can you who have died (been made free) to the condemning law of sin and death continue “measuring” sin and Grace by human standards?  Don’t you know God’s Grace is without measure?  So just live IN His Grace and live IN it…NOW!

False weights and unequal measures–the LORD detests “double” standards of every kind. (Proverbs 20:10)

God’s Grace goes beyond anything we could ever measure!  It also goes far beyond anything you or I could ever do or say!

And the only way we will ever truly know the Person of “Unconditional Love” (Christ) is by allowing Him to take us into the hard places, the places that go beyond our control and into the unseen Grace of God!  The places where we are forced to push Unconditional Love to unknown limits, until we finally know the One Truth!

That One Truth being…that He will NEVER leave or forsake us, and His Love is Love!

Love without limits!

God forbid we ever turn back to the law in our vain attempt to measure the immeasurable and unfathomable True Grace of God!

Only God only NOW!

About the Author

I started out very early in my walk with God by reading a lot of books by many of the "deeper life" Christian teachers. After reading the accounts of these men I developed a desire for knowing God that was far beyond the level of anyone I saw around me. It was during this time a good friend and mentor prescribed to me the following prayer; He said to me, Rich, if you really want ALL that God has for you in this life then just pray this prayer. "Lord, bring me to the end of myself and give me a revelation of who I am IN Christ!" In 2010 I wrote my first article on Facebook, and now three years and three hundred articles later, and after having many of my articles published in blogs and other online publications around the world, I just released my first book. It's a "deeper life" day-by-day devotional that is all about this transformational REAL truth of who we are as believers, which is of course...Rich "IN" Christ.
