Safety

I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!” For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.
– Psalm 91:2-4 (NASB)

Everything in Atlanta seems to be coming to life after an unseasonably cold and long winter. New sights and sounds accompany the arrival of spring: tulips are blooming and birds are chirping. One of the most exciting arrivals to the area is a baby eagle.

Last year in a small town north of Atlanta, a pair of bald eagles built a nest in preparation for the eventual arrival of a baby bird. The local university installed a camera so the nest’s activity could be monitored by online viewers around the world without disturbing or alarming the eagles. Late February, after weeks of anticipation, one of the eggs hatched and a tiny eaglet appeared. The online audience buzzed with excitement as we watched the parents take care of the new life. The male and female adult eagles took turns gathering food for the eaglet while continuing to nestle the tiny bird under their chest when it was time to rest.

A week or so after the egg hatched, something unexpected occurred. Another adult bald eagle in the area attempted to attack the nest to harm the eaglet. The mother eagle happened to be on duty at the nest when the attack began, and the online camera caught all of the excitement. I happened to tune in and catch a portion of the incident and was able to capture the picture included above in our header image.

It was amazing to see the mother spread her wings over the eaglet and use her body to provide shelter and protection for her baby. As she hovered over the baby bird, she screeched out an alarm to her mate who was in the area but away from the nest. Eventually the father returned to the nest after having successfully dive-bombed the attacker.

As I watched this drama unfold, I was reminded of the passage in Psalm 91: “He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.” When we are under attack and feel like we will be overwhelmed by our enemy, we can rest assured that the Lord will deliver us. His faithfulness serves as a shield against the enemy’s attempt to thwart God’s perfect plan for our life. Despite the adrenaline that is bound to be coursing through our bodies when a crisis arrives, we can take a deep breath knowing that our loving heavenly father’s wings are outstretched over our very life. We can say to the Lord with confidence, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!”
