Who does ‘He that overcomes…’ refer to in Rev. 3:5?

Rev. 3:5 says, “He that overcomes…I will not blot his name out of the book of life.” The only way I can explain that is to cite the same writer in 1 John 5:5, “Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” Since you believe Jesus is the Son of God, then this makes you an “overcome” by definition, not because of your sinless performance, but because of your faith in the finished work of Jesus for you and I. We are “more that conquerors through Him that loved us“ (Rom. 8:37). That doesn’t mean that we perform perfectly, but that we are trusting in the One Who performed perfectly as our eternal hope.
