With Strength Comes Responsibility

Strength out of control can be one of the most damaging things in the world. It’s what makes tornadoes so destructive and atomic bombs so deadly. It’s also what leads to child abuse and domestic violence. When a strong man has an uncontrolled temper, look out! When our strengths are used irresponsibily, people often get hurt.

This is even true in the way we respond to each other as Believers. God has blessed each of us with particular gifts and unique strengths. Odds are, someone close to us may be weak in the areas that we are strong.

How we respond to their weakness says a lot about our strength. If we respond with arrogance, thinking that we are closer to God or that God loves us more, then we don’t understand God’s grace at all. If you or I are strong in any area, it’s because of God’s grace, not our ingenuity. However, if we respond to others weaknesses with patience and grace then we are probably acting more like God at that moment than any other time in our life. We are bearing with our brothers and sisters and using our strength responsibly.

Romans 15:1-2 says, "We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up."

Strength is for service, not for status. And remember…with strength comes responsibility.
