Is speaking in tongues a legitimate gift that God uses today in his church?

I’ll share where I am with these issues. I believe tongues are still operative in our day and are for the edification of the individual or for the entire body, but only IF THERE IS AN INTERPREATION. However, I believe problems with speaking in tongues abound because of the abuses. One person is to speak at a time; if a person speaks in tongues without an interpretation, he/she is not being led by the Holy Spirit. Anabel and I spent many months seeking this gift, but the Holy Spirit apparently had other ideas for us as we were never given this gift. When Jesus said in Luke 11:13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” He was speaking to unregenerate people. He was giving them a futurehope that would become available in Acts 2. The H.S. wasn’t available to enter into a Believer till regeneration when Jesus completed His work on the cross. So, Lk. 11:13 is not addressing those who are born again and the Christian who encourages you to ask for Him by showing you such a verse may mean well, but he is in error. Secondly, all who are born again get the HolySpirit at salvation or they don’t get saved. Rom. 8:9 “…if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.” The Believer who asks God for the Holy Spirit is asking for something he already has. That’s unbelief. Thirdly, tongues is not the secret to victorious living; trusting the Holy Spirit of Christ to express life through us is God’s provision forour victory over the world, the flesh and the devil (Jn. 15:5, et al). I believe prophecy is a valid gift for today as well.
