Life Eternal

The Gospel provides eternal life. We have heard it said but what does it mean. I strongly believe knowing and celebrating this truth can absolute change any life! Let us take a deeper look into how the Gospel not only affects our eternity but also our lives in the here and now. Let us start by looking at your understanding and working definition of “eternal life”. Sunday morning at church, I finished our third sermon from John 17. What an incredible chapter of scripture! What a divine conversation we are blessed to have recorded and preserved for us! Concerning Jesus’ prayer found in this chapter Scroggie says, “The out-pouring of the soul of the redeemer is for our worshipful contemplation rather than for our critical analysis.”

As I studied this passage my heart was gripped with excitement and joy at the realization of verse number three. “These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” Did you catch that?! Did you see it?! I sure hope so since I highlighted it and italicized it. I sure hope so because this truth takes you from being a waiting Christian who thinks that the Gospel secured eternal life for you to enjoy in the future to being a Christian who learns how you can enjoy the eternal life given to you RIGHT NOW!

According to Jesus “life eternal” is that “they (the disciples) might know thee (our Heavenly Father) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, who thou (the Heavenly Father) has sent.” For the sake of clarity in hermeneutics check out verse twenty one to see that this prayer not only applies to the disciples but to all who would believe the Gospel from their faithful witness – this means us!

The eternal life that the Gospel provides is not a destination to be awaited but a person to be known – today! Enjoy the life eternal today as the Apostle Paul did by counting all things loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Jesus Christ, that you may know Him and the power of His resurrection. This is the high calling we press toward in our lives! What an awesome life we are now freed to live!

This was Jesus’ prayer for us almost 2000 years ago. He knew the “hour” had come and He would be headed to the cross. He prayed His disciples would know what life eternal truly is. This is my prayer for you today. Let us reconsider what eternal life is and when it started in our lives! Spend time in the Word and let’s grow in knowledge of the wonderful truth of our Savior! As it often has been said well eternal life does not just refer to the quantity of life but the quality!
